FCC’s Julius Genachowski Comments on the National Broadband Plan

Julius-Genachowski-FCCChairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Julius Genachowski, made some remarks at the open agenda meeting on “A National Broadband Plan for Our Future” held Tuesday.

Genachowski was joined by Blair Levin, the FCC broadband chief, and as well by members of Levin’s team, to talk about the National Broadband Plan, which intends to spur economic growth and employment, and boost Americans’ capabilities in education, healthcare, homeland security and more.

The FCC chairman commented on the development that lead up to the national broadband strategy. The process involved the FCC’s first comprehensive series of staff-level public workshops, with 36 meetings attracting more than 2,500 participants and 31 public notices issued generating more than 23,000 comments.

Genachowski also gave examples of FCC “firsts,” including new-media technologies. FCC now has 330,000 Twitter followers–which is more than William Shatner has, Genachowski said–and a blog that has generated more than 1,200 comments.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the broadband team that drove this process and pulled the plan together, as part of an agency-wide process that enlisted the talent and expertise of every single bureau and office at the FCC,” Genachowski said.
