The Department of Homeland Security is giving out university program funding to further research on terrorism.

University of Maryland, College Park is going to receive a $3.3 million grant from the DHS Center for Excellence. This grant will fund the START program, the Study for Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism.

Sens. Barbara Mikuiski and Benjamin Cardin made this announcement of the funding that will be used to advance the knowledge of terrorism yesterday. The goal of the START program is to help make the nation a safer by helping further the understanding of the roots of terrorism to detect and prevent terrorist attacks.

Mikulski said, “START is an incredible asset to the Department of Homeland Security in this effort, and I congratulate the University of Maryland for this well-deserved recognition.”

This is the sixth year of funding from DHS for this program.

“The University of Maryland is at the forefront of groundbreaking research into terrorism that will help us prevent future attacks and ultimately defeat those who want to do us harm,” Cardin said.
