Robert Carey

Navy Chief Information Officer Robert Carey announced he will replace David Wennergren as the Defense Department’s deputy CIO and deputy assistant secretary of defense for information management, Washington Technology reports.

The website reports Carey will assume his new position starting Monday, Oct. 25.

As CIO of the Navy, Carey oversaw efforts to use new technologies to realize innovation and efficiencies. Carey had a knack for being ahead of the curve on IT issues. In January 2008, he became the first federal CIO with a public blog, and the first Navy CIO to issue a Gov 2.0 policy.

Earlier this summer, he shifted to the U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/U.S. 10th Fleet to focus on the operational component of the cyber world.

Wennergren, whose position Carey is taking over, recently became assistant deputy chief management officer in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Washington Technology reports.
