White House National Security Adviser James L. Jones will resign, NBC News reports. He will be replaced by Deputy National Security Adviser Tom Donilon.

President Barack Obama is expected to make a formal announcement from the Rose Garden at 1 p.m., NBC News reports.

Jones’ resignation will take effect in two weeks, according to the AP, and it follows a string of high-level administration departures or announcements about White House exits.

After weeks of speculation, Rahm Emanuel announced last Friday he would step down as chief of staff to run for mayor of Chicago. Earlier this month, senior White House adviser David Axelrod revealed he would be leaving Washington early next year to begin work on President Obama’s re-election efforts.

Before Obama appointed Jones, a retired Marine Corps general, in 2009, he served as commander of the United States European Command and as NATO Supreme Allied commander for Europe.

Jones kept a low profile, the AP reports, but still “put his stamp on Obama’s major foreign policy decisions over the last 20 months, included a beefed-up troop presence in Afghanistan, a winding down of the war in Iraq and a retooled relationship with Russia.”

Donilon, Jones’ replacement, has been a key player in national-security policymaking and is “is known for bringing an understanding of domestic policy and politics to the job,” according to the AP.
