President Barack Obama met with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and recently appointed Transportation Security Authority for an update on aviation security, according to a report in The Global Times.

Official briefed Obama on DHS strategic plans for air safety, as well mass-transit transportation such as rail systems. The meeting was part of a regular homeland security briefing focused on counterterrorism efforts and was not prompted by a specific threat, The Global Times reported.

The meeting also follows last week’s declaration by the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization, which created new guidelines for global cooperation to deal with threats against commercial airlines.

Obama hailed the new guidelines and sense of collaboration.

“I commend the International Civil Aviation Organization for adopting yesterday’s Declaration on Aviation Security, which forges a historic new foundation for aviation security that will better protect our world from evolving terrorist threats,” he said, according to a report on Homeland Security Today.

The ICAO strategy involves seven goals for the next five years, including boosting education about security threats and international cooperation to build and maintain security measures.

In the U.S. new guidelines for air safety were prompted after the Dec. 25, 2009 attempted bombing on an airplane preparing to land at the Detroit airport.
