The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have taken the lead in implementing health IT practices, as part of efforts to more fully incorporate Gov 2.0 principles at the nation’s flagship public-health agency, according to a report on Federal News Radio.
CDC Chief Information Officer Jim Seligman said of the agency’s more than $430 million IT budget, some $130 billion was awarded to state and local governments improve information sharing.
For example, in October, CDC announced it was opening a $5 billion contract for IT services to state and local governments, Federal News Radio reported.
“Much of the work we do is in partnership and collaboration with our state and local partners,” Seligman was quoted saying. “It’s part of our information supply chain.”
According to Federal News Radio, CDC Director Thomas Frieden has made agency outreach a top priority for CDC.
This is not the only investment in IT or Web 2.0 CDC has recently made, though. The site also reports the agency is putting the finishing touches on a secure identity card to access its network. CDC is also looking to use Web 2.0 methods to find better ways to communicate to the public about public-health issues.
