A majority of federal managers believe the stagnant economy and federal budget pressures will force agencies to put energy efficiencies initiatives on the back burner.
Zogby International, on behalf of Schneider Electric and the Alliance to Save Energy, polled 201 federal managers with purchasing power and found 66 percent believe tight budgets will hurt green initiatives, according to a report in Federal Times.
But Floyd Deschamps, senior vice president of policy and research at ASE, said energy efficiency goals can actually help reduce budget pressures in the long run. And in the short term, there are ways to work around them.
“There are some things that federal agencies can work on, such as internal controls and motivation, that don’t require additional funding,” DesChamps told Federal Times.
More findings, according to Federal Times:
- 79 percent believe energy efficiency is the most effective way to lower greenhouse gases.
- 17 percent said changing behavior is the most important way of achieving goals.
- 32 said lack of funding is the biggest hurdle to achieving agency goals.
- 49 percent report that energy efficiency in their operations has significantly increased over the last two years.
