In a poll of social media experts and Facebook users, the armed services were singled out for their social media savvy, according to a report on Nextgov.

Facebook’s Washington department polled what Nextgov said was a “handful” of social media experts as well as Facebook users on three of the site’s fan pages:  Congress on Facebook, U.S. Politics on Facebook and Government on Facebook .

In particular, the Navy was praised for responding to queries posted on its “wall,” as well as having outreach efforts through interactive questions.

Of all the military branches on Facebook, the Marines are the most popular – as evidenced by its nearly 1 million followers, the most of any of the military services, Nextgov reports.

The Facebook rankings follow a Washington Post survey of Washington, D.C.’s Top “Tweeps” – the best Twitter users.

In the category of best government agency on Twitter, NASA took home top honors, as voted by fellow Tweeps.

Last month, a report ranking ranking public sector, industry and advocacy organizations on their adoption of social media and digital savvy placed NASA first on its list, calling the space agency a social media “genius.”
