For the General Services Administration’s Mary Davie, who heads up the agency’s technology-acquisition shop, social media is no laughing matter.

“People may laugh at social media and say it’s just playing,” Davie, assistant commissioner of the GSA’s Office of Integrated Technology Services, said at an acquisition conference this week, according to Federal Computer Week. “But for me, with tools such as GovLoop, Twitter and LinkedIn, I connect with people with expertise that I otherwise would not have known.”

Davie is a prolific tweeter, herself, usually shooting off short, pithy missives  from her Twitter handle (@marydavie) multiple times a day.

More broadly, Davie said, the key to effective federal procurement lies not just in improving communication between government and industry, but also in getting the many sectors of the government on the same page.

“We need to collaborate more, not just with industry, but with each other,” Davie said.

Davie said she is also a risk-taker, and she said she believes in doing things differently, or “we are never going to advance,” according to FCW.

Part of that something different, she explained,  includes the crowd-sourced Better Buy project and governmentwide assisted acquisitions.
