The House Appropriations Committee has cut funding by 14 percent for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration and a number of other smaller agencies in a spending bill the committee passed this week, according to Federal Times.

The White House originally requested some nearly $23 billion for the upcoming fiscal year, already $2.7 billion less than the amount slate for this year. However, the committee’s bill would authorize only $17.25 billion for those agencies.

And individual departments could fare even worse.

Federal Times reports USDA funding would be reduced by 15 percent and FDA by 11.6 percent.

Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-KY.) said the funding cuts, which will lead to leaner federal agencies, amounted to “hard choices [that] can simply no longer be put off on to our children in the name of political expediency.”

But not everyone agreed. “This bill goes beyond lean,” said Rep. Sam Farr (D-Calif.). “It’s downright emaciated.”

The committee’s legislation must still be approved by the full House and Senate.
