The federal government plans to shutter more than 40 percent of its data centers over the next four years, with 195 centers closing at the end of 2011, the NY Times reports.

Currently, 2,000 data centers operate around the country. In 2012, 178 data centers will close, with 800 centers closing by 2015. The Obama administration estimates the closures will save taxpayers more than $3 billion.

“Duplication, waste and inefficiency are never acceptable, but it is especially intolerable in these challenging budgetary times,” federal Chief Performance Officer and OMB’s Deputy Director for Management Jeffrey Zients said in a statement.

In 2012, the Treasury Department is closing a nearly 13,000-square-foot data center in Lanham, Md., that costs more than $400,000 per year for leasing and electricity.
