A new Army restructuring commission has been charged with finding ways to make the Army more agile and cost-effective, Army Secretary John McHugh said Monday.

The Institutional Army Transformation Commission will build on the work of an earlier short-term task force that examined the Army’s organizations and business practices.

The short-term task force identified short-term improvements and long-term structural changes within the institutional Army, or Generating Force. The institutional Army prepares, trains, educates and supports deployed forces.

The commission will implement the changes already identified by the short-term task force and identify new ways to optimize resources. It will function for the next three years.

“This longer term, more enduring approach is historically and practically necessary and will help make continuous transformation a part of Army culture,” McHugh said during a town hall with member’s of the Army’s Senior Executive Service.
