The Army announced Thursday it plans to cut 8,741 civilian jobs by Oct. 2012, helping to meet former Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ mandated efficiency initiatives.

Federal Times reports the Army will lose $834 in operations and maintenance funding as part of the cuts. The cuts amount to nearly 3 percent of the Army’s more than 290,000 civilian employees.

“We are in a very challenging fiscal environment and understand the impact these cuts will have on our civilians and their families,” said Thomas R. Lamont, assistant secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. “Tough choices have to be made, but we’ll make them in a thoughtful and deliberate manner that best supports the Army’s mission.”

The Army said affected commands and agencies have 30 days to develop plans to implement the cuts, identify the actions needed to be taken and to develop a timeline for the actions and reductions.
