A Army top acquisition official said Thursday he is unaware of any instance where body armor has failed to protect a soldier against an ammunition round.

The AP reports Lt. Gen Bill Phillips addressed concerns over the safety of body armor at a press conference.

“We want to make sure that your readers have complete and total confidence in the Army’s ability to field protective (gear) to look after its soldiers while they’re deployed in combat zones and that, internally, the soldier and their family knows that as well,” Phillips said.

This comes more than two weeks after the Defense Department inspector general found the Army improperly tested bullet-blocking plates for body armor, and cannot determine if 5.1 million plates meet standards.

The Army is responsible for acquiring body armor for all service branches and Defense Department civilians.

Phillips said all of the audit’s recommendations have been implemented and will be closed by October.
