Tuesday’s earthquake on the east coast revealed the problem with too many people trying to use their cell phones at the same time: some could not connect at all.

The east coast is now bracing for the impact of Hurricane Irene. In light of the post-quake problems, the nation’s top emergency official warned Americans to not get attached to their cell phones when Irene strikes.

“With heavy congestion, you may not be able get through,” Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Craig Fugate said Thursday.

Fugate appeared on CNN Thursday morning to discuss preparations for Hurricane Irene.

Fugate advised Americans to use local broadcasters as their primary source of information during major weather events and other emergencies.

“Those local broadcasters are going to be giving you the best information real-time from  local officials out press conferences,” Fugate said.
