The two-year eligibility limitation for noncompetitive hiring of spouses of certain deceased or disabled veterans has been eliminated, the Office of Personnel Management announced Wednesday.

The military spouse hiring authority, effective Sept. 11, 2009, allowed certain spouses not already federal employees to apply to agency job opportunity announcements without having to compete with other applicants.

“Military spouses make countless sacrifices for our nation through their dedication and support on the home front while their loved ones are serving,” said OPM Director John Berry. “In recognition of their sacrifice, this rule will help military spouses find employment in the government.”

OPM said 887 military spouses were hired between Oct. 2009 and Oct. 2010 under the military spouse hiring authority.
