The Defense Department is opening up to smartphones and tablets and trying to do it securely, a Pentagon official said Monday.

AFPS reports the department is concerned with issues regarding users’ general lack of knowledge of how the devices work, potentially compromising the devices.

“We do want this innovation in the Department of Defense so we don’t want to say no,” said Robert E. Young, division chief of outreach and communications for the Information Assurance Program. “But we want to do it safely and securely.”

In an interview with AFPS and the Pentagon Channel, Young said the Pentagon is evaluating how people use the new devices.

Both the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Army are looking at new applications for the devices.
