Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said Village Post Offices could be a potential replacement for locations affected by the closures. Village Post Offices would be operated by local businesses such as pharmacies and grocery stores. They would offer the same services as post offices in affected locations, including flat-rate packaging and stamp sales.
âBy working with third-party retailers, weâre creating easier, more convenient access to our products and services when and where our customers want them,â Donahoe said. âThe Village Post Office will offer another way for us to meet our customersâ needs.â
Federal Times reports the Postal Service is expected to lose more than $8 billion this year. Of the 3,653 post offices under review, more than 3,000 generate less than $27,500 per year in revenue.
