Air travelers involuntarily bumped from an overbooked flight will receive double the amount of money they are eligible for as compensation, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Wednesday.

LaHood announced a series of passenger protections on his official blog. The new protections also include a requirement that airlines refund any fee for carrying a bag if the bag is lost.

Airlines must also prominently disclose all optional fees, including baggage and food, on their websites.

“The Department of Transportation’s new passenger protections will help ensure that air travelers receive the respect they deserve before, during and after their flight,” LaHood said.

The time limit on tarmac delays was extended to international flights of foreign airlines at domestic airports. Tarmac delays for international flights are limited to four hours and delays for domestic flights are limited to three hours.
