The White House has ordered federal agencies to review their spending on conferences after a well-publicized report was released on the Justice Department’s conference-spending practices.

An inspector general report said the DOJ spent $121 million on conferences in 2008 and 2009, exceeding its spending limit.

The conferences included high-priced food and drinks, including $16 muffins and coffee that cost $8.24 for an 8-ounce cup.

In a memo Wednesday, Jack Lew, director of the Office of Management and Budget, said all conference spending must be approved by the deputy secretaries until appropriate controls are in place to prevent excessive spending.

“As responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars, we must seize every opportunity to improve government performance and management,” Lew said. “So that we save money and deliver a higher quality of service to the American people.”
