If anyone needed more proof of the country’s economic struggles, the latest report from the Census Bureau should suffice.

The bureau’s annual report of statistics on income, poverty and health care statistics for year 2010 paints a bleak picture of the state of the economy.

In 2010, real median income was $49,445, a 2.3 percent decline from the 2009 median. That is the first time the median has dipped below $50,000 since 1996.

The number of Americans living in poverty grew 0.8 percent in 2010, from 43.5 million to 46.2 million. The nation’s official poverty rate now stands at 15.1 percent, up from 14.3 percent in 2009.

The number of people without health insurance coverage rose from 49.0 million in 2009 to 49.9 million in 2010, with the percentage of those uninsured remaining at 16.3 percent.
