Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has been given orders from Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to “take the lead for eliminating wasteful spending, consolidating duplicative functions and driving ongoing and new efficiency initiatives,” according to a memo obtained by DefenseNews.com

The Pentagon announced it is trying to trim $450 billion out of its budget over the next 10 years, and Panetta aims to cut $60 billion over the next five years.

Panetta’s memo orders Carter to meet with Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Adm. James Winnefeld, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to “set in place an architecture to govern decision-making on defense strategy and budget options.”

Carter was appointed to his position in August by President Obama.
