Richard Spires, chief information officer of the Department of Homeland Security stated his views Tuesday on a problematic situation for federal CIOs at the ACT/IAC Executive Leadership Conference in Atlanta.
Spires insinuates that CIOs are not holding their position for a long enough period of time, and there is evidence to back up his claim.
A September Government Accountability Office report found the median tenure of an agency CIO since 2004 has been 25 months and just 21 months for politically appointed CIOs.
Spires also suggested that longtime civil servants should be considered for CIO positions more often.
A new tool being introduced by the CIO Council — Spires is the vice chairman — will allow users “to form groups, be able to share information, be able to post things.” Essentially its something similar to FedSpace.
