Federal CIO Steven VanRoekel has the government’s data centers in his sights, aiming to close 472 of the IT hubs by the end of 2012.

The number of centers on the chopping block has recently grown as VanRoekel is promoting “bolder steps” in curbing costs. Data center operations and related support currently account for nearly 30 percent of the federal government’s IT budget.

VanRoekel is now expanding on U.S. plans to close by 2015 800 of its approximately 2,000 data centers that are larger than 500 square feet.

In an effort “to really capture all square footage”, VanRoekel is targeting smaller facilities, ones that are 100 square feet or more, and agencies now believe they can close 962 total data centers by that date.

On Friday, the U.S. began releasing statistics on the data centers being closed.
