It seems the sentiments of the Cold War haven’t been put to rest with U.S. intelligence agencies labeling Russia and China as the most significant threats to the nation’s interest.
U.S. agencies concluded that the two countries have gained access to large amounts of American research and development data in order to build their own economies.
The Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive said other nation states are growing threats including the two historic enemies and even some U.S. allies in a report to Congress titled, “Foreign Spies Stealing US Economic Secrets in Cyberspace.”
More specifically, it says,”China and Russia will remain aggressive and capable collectors of sensitive U.S. economic information and technologies, particularly in cyberspace,” as reported by CBS.
The report indicates that areas of interest include “backbone” technology, business information on scarce natural resources, military technologies and civilian and dual-use technologies. The most likely culprit is the disgruntled insider, according to the report, who may leak information.
While the report points to these two countries, it also did not state the the number of attacks that are government-sponsored, nor could they identify the actual culprit outside of the general geographic area.
