Deal or no deal, agencies are preparing for a shutdown in case short-term funding deals lose steam or do not happen at all, according to a Washington Post report.

While agencies such as the departments of Commerce, Agriculture, House and Urban Development, Transportation, Justice, State and NASA and other agencies will not be affected due to a previous partial spending bill, agencies that will be affected are issuing warnings, just in case.

Congress has previously passed two short-term spending measures since October. As Congress has yet to reach agreement, agencies like the Office of Personnel Management issued guidance in regard to shutdown furloughs late yesterday.

OPM said employees will receive pay for hours worked prior to the appropriations lapse and in the event of furlough, Congress will determine if pay will be received for the furlough period.

The Post reported that the Interior Department released similar warnings, saying that if a funding lapse occurs “bargaining unit employees who are not engaged in one of the excepted functions will be placed in a furlough status.”

If the partial shutdown occurs, certain employees will continue work. Who and what work is necessary and to continue during a shutdown would be decided before the shutdown start.

Similar notices were issued in April when faced with the same challenge. As some complained in the past that the notices were not timely, according to the Post, this time agencies are making it clear what could happen if Congress doesn’t move forward.
