The White House has recently released its cybersecurity plan, “The Trustworthy Cyberspace: Strategic Plan for the Federal Cybersecurity Research and Development Program.” Authors of the plan say the program promotes three main principles.
Those principles include research aimed at cybersecurity deficiencies and focused on root causes of vulnerabilities, having the plan channel resources from a multitude of disciplines and sectors, and the initiative adapting to changes in technologies and in the threat environment.
The authors higlighted four strategic thrusts they say will organize activities and drive progress in cybersecurity research and development:
- Inducing change, which utilizes new themes that direct efforts toward understanding root causes of known cyber threats
- Developing scientific foundations that inform the field of cybersecurity through the adoption of a disciplined scientific approach
- Maximizing research impact to catalyze cooperation between the private and public sector and collaboration across international borders
- Accelerating transition to practice, ensuring new technologies and strategies are quickly adopted and implemented
“Using this strategic plan as a road map, sustained efforts in these areas will result in a more secure and trustworthy cyberspace,” said Howard Schmidt, White House cybersecurity coordinator and Aneesh Chopra, chief technology officer, in a White House blog post. “We invite researchers and innovators in industry and academia to join us in this effort. Together, we can maximize the benefits of research and accelerate their transition into the marketplace.”
