Beginning Jan. 9, the Air Force will offer a second round of early retirements and buyouts to reduce its civilian workforce according to an Air Force announcement.

“The Air Force recognizes the invaluable contributions of our civilian workforce, but also recognizes the fiscal constraints under which the Department of Defense and the government as a whole are operating,” said Maj. Gen. Sharon Dunbar, director of force management policy.

In an effort to reduce both temporary and term civilian workforces, the Air Force entered a 90 day hiring freeze and began offering early exit options on Aug. 9, 2011.

After eliminating nearly 9,000 positions, the freeze was lifted on Dec. 15, 2011. However, the Air Force announced it still needed to cut an additional 4,500 employees.

Applicants approved for this round are required to separate on or before April 30.
