Major defense contractors are now sharing independent research and development spending data with the government through a secure Web portal.

A new rule, published Jan. 30 in the Federal Register, requires companies that claim more than $11 million a year on IR&D and bid and proposal costs to submit data to the portal.

The rule also says smaller contractors can submit data on their own.

The new Defense Innovation Marketplace will compile IR&D information into a single database accessible to Defense Department contracting officials.

The government intends for collected data to help better understand the types of independent projects defense contractors are working on.

In addition, the portal will also be a communication mechanism between contracting officials and the private industry.
