Attorney General Eric Holder appointed Tony West to serve as acting associate attorney general, Holder announced Monday.

Holder said West, currently acting assistant attorney general for the civil division, would assume the Justice Department‘s third highest-ranked position upon incumbent Associate Attorney General Thomas Perreli‘s departure.

Holder appointed Stuart Delery, currently senior counselor to the attorney general, to West’s position as head of the civil division.

West has led the civil division since 2009, where he led the Justice Department’s largest litigating division and focused on areas such as healthcare and mortage fraud.

The department said West helped recover more than $8.8 billion of lost taxes from fraud and abuse and $3.5 billion of criminal and civil penalties and restitution.

Delery joined the department in 2009, when he began serving as chief of staff and counselor to the deputy attorney general.

Delery also served as a clerk for several Supreme Court justices.
