Report: Federal Real Estate Costs Rose $1.5B in 2010

Federal real estate maintenance costs rose by more than $1.5 billion in 2010, Federal Times reports.

Federal Times obtained a General Services Administration report which said the government spent $30.7 billion to maintain 3.3 billion square feet of property in 2010.

Maintenance costs went up from $29.9 billion in 2009, excluding some Defense Department facilities.

GSA said maintenance costs include cleaning, groundskeeping, repairs and trash disposal.

On average, the government spent $5.30 per square-foot to maintain property it owned and $15 to maintain leased space; an increase from $12.80 in 2009.

Federal Times also reported the cost of maintaining excess and underutilized property decreased from $1.8 billion to $1.6 billion per year in 2010.
