Mark Weatherford, former chief security officer at North American Electric Reliability Corp., joined the Department of Homeland Security as deputy cybersecurity undersecretary in October.

Since then, Weatherford appointed John Streufert director of the department’s national cybersecurity division Jan. 17.

Weatherford told GovInfo Security in a recent interview at the RSA Conference 2012 that he aims to create an all-star cyber team for department.

Weatherford said Streufert’s hire also marks one of his priorities to get non-defense and non-intelligence agencies to continually monitor their information technology systems.

Weatherford said he aims to set aside the $204 million the White House administration proposed for security initiatives on continuous monitoring.

However, Weatherford is more concerned at finding cyber talent than he is regarding funding, according to Federal News Radio.

Weatherford also said he as advocate for the Cybersecurity Act of 2012.

Weatherford, who has worked with government while in private industry, said private industry should create the standards and DHS will ensure the standards are met.
