The head of the General Services Administration plans to implement more shared services in the government, Federal Computer Week reports.
Martha Johnson said Thursday that the GSA would develop shared services projects aimed at making the government more interactive and responsive to citizens.
Speaking at the Acquisition Excellence conference, Johnson said that one of the GSA’s top priorities is to address federal bulk buying and redundancies.
Johnson said the government could increase its capability if it pools its purchasing methods, according to FCW.
She suggested agencies need to be open and honest with each other about the opportunities and risks of shared services.
Johnson said increased use of mobile devices and virtual services are areas agencies should invest in to meet the increasing demands for information from citizens who expect a responsive government.
Stan Ratcliffe, president of NCR Government Systems, also spoke about the increasing information demand from citizens.
He told ExecutiveBiz that self-service solutions facilitate information exchange.
Johnson suggests the government should use the app.gov website to aid in its mobility initiatives.
