House Nearing Transportation Bill Decision Deadline

1 min read

The Senate approved a $109 billion transportation bill Wednesday to subsidize road and transit projects and potentially create 2.8 million jobs within the next two years, The Hill reports.

The 74-22 approval culminates five weeks worth of debate regarding amendments necessary for the bill.

The House has two-and-a-half weeks to either create a new version of the bill or take up the approved Senate version before highway funding expires on March 31.

House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) version of the transportation bill outlines a $260 billion project spanning five years, The Hill reports.

Boehner’s version has not been well-received by both House and Senate colleagues due to the project’s proposed source of funding.

That version allocates funds from increased domestic oil drilling and cuts to public transportation funding.

The Senate version aims to generate funding through the federal gas tax, which the legislation reauthorizes the collection of.

That version also closes tax loopholes and is expected to create $10 billion in funds, according to The Hill.
