The Defense Department asked Congress for approval to perform two Base Realignment and Closure rounds throughout the next two years, American Forces Press Service reported.

The Pentagon is looking to close military bases in both the U.S., where it needs congressional approval, and overseas, where it does not need approval.

More than $487 billion will be cut from the Pentagon’s budget over the next decade and military end strength will be reduced 5.5 percent by 2018.

The Pentagon spends around $40 billion annually on building construction and sustainment and an additional $15 billion goes to support programs.

The Department is actively targeting Europe as it looks to cut the number of bases from more than 300 to around 200 while eliminating excess support structures.

The last time the Pentagon entered a BRAC round was in 2005, which eliminated around three percent of its capability and cost $35.1 billion to execute.
