The head of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s information technology strategy announced plans to integrate the sub-agency’s IT and cloud computing assets with the Energy Department Thursday.

However, Energy Deputy CIO Robert Brese cautioned this migration may take a while, Federal Computer Week reports.

Brese confirmed at a a Federal Computer Week event Thursday that the NNSA and Energy department will move some information and systems to a shared cloud.

NNSA’s CIO Robert Osborn said this effort is part of his larger plan to modernize NNSA’s IT functions, but Brese said security concerns and policy remain stalwart challenges that may slow the process.

Brese said much of his department’s information is unclassified, but is still sensitive data, the report said. As a result, Brese said he expects the Energy department will use a hybrid cloud instead of a public cloud.

The Office of Management and Budget reported that cyber attacks on federal networks have increased, but leveled slightly in 20111.

Brese said the Energy department is not an exception from this trend and suggests it should serve as a warning as the agency moves toward a cloud structure, according to the report.

Brese said the department is working with both the State and Commerce departments to protect both export control and arms control information, according to the report.

The type of information the department is responsible for slows its move to the cloud, but Brese said he aims to eventually move functions to one cloud.

Brese said the process moving the department’s Idaho nuclear research facility’s email to the cloud has taken seven months due to policy restraints.
