The director of the Tricare Management Activity reaffirmed the Pentagon’s goal to provide healthcare for soldiers and their families, American Forces Press Service reports.

Dr. Jonathan Woodson, also assistant secretary for health affairs, recommended the Pentagon identify best practices for improving both facilities and information sharing.

Defense health program expenses account for around $53 billion, or 10 percent of the Pentagon’s base budget.

Woodson said expenses disbursed for medical defense projects in addition to research and development benefit both the medical and science communities, according to AFPS.

Woodson also agreed with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Martin Dempsey’s decision regarding the fiscal restrictions.

He also warned against sequestration, which will force the Pentagon to cut $500 billion over the next decade if Congress cannot reach a resolution regarding the Budget Control Act.
