The government standards body is using a two-pronged approach to make its internal technology components more customer-centric, Federal News Radio reports.

National Institute of Standards and Technology Chief Information Office So Del Brocket said his agency’s approach toward better information technology use includes new standards and pilot programs to promote innovation.

Brocket said the new standards system, Information Technology Infrastructure Library, allows NIST to examine its processes in order to develop methods for improvement.

NIST will transition to a new cloud-based platform in order to aid with managing and examining its systems in June, he said.

The second approach Brocket said the agency will implement is to encourage work with agency customers for testing new technologies and solutions instead of relying solely on the CIO community.

CIO organizations are often built around structural roles and NIST has organizations developed for data centers and application development, but Brocket wants a matrix formation.

A matrix approach would allow NIST to better identify how customers are engaging with the agency as it looks to expand its collaboration among organizations to ensure each NIST lab is getting the IT services they need.

NIST labs have prioritized areas such as developing mobile apps, collaborative tools that allow users to co-edit documents, user device and remote access for employee mobility, network and security services and cloud and data center consolidation.

According to Brocket, NIST has increasingly focused in these five areas and will continue to do so with several pilot programs dedicated to the subjects.

In one instance, NIST ran an iPad test with 100 agency users in order to develop a method for securing the devices.

Brocket said the agency is introducing iPad production services in June to let customers implement tablets into their work life.

He expects the agency will examine additional operating systems in months to come.
