The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has opened the doors of its new headquarters in the Ballston area of Arlington, Va., Fairfax News reports.

DARPA moved from Virginia Square to Ballston, where it will house more than 1,200 employees and contractors, the newspaper reported.

The agency received a number of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design citations for sustainable design, construction and maintenance of the new building.

DARPA maintains a small employee population in order to keep it flexible when priorities and research are shifted, according to the newspaper.

It has an annual budget allocation of $2.8 billion and received additional $208 million during fiscal year 2012 for its work on cyber research.

In November 2011, the agency said it plans to increase cybersecurity spending by 50 percent throughout the next five years.
