The Department of Homeland Security has released a list of keywords and phrases it follows when monitoring social networking sites and online media, Daniel Miller reports for the Daily Mail.
DHS analysts use the list as a reference when searching online for terrorist and related threats against the U.S.
It contains eight categories: Domestic Security, HAZMAT & Nuclear, Health Concern and H1N1, Infrastructure Security, Southwest Border Violence, Terrorism, Weather/Disaster/Emergency and Cybersecurity.
Each category has a set of related key words and the words are found in DHS’ 2011 “Analyst’s Desktop Binder†used at the National Operations Center, Miller reported.
DHS officials unwillingly published the list after a hearing at a House subcommittee regarding a freedom of information request, according to DailyMail.
Officials explained that they do not intend to police the internet but rather to become aware of any possible threats.
