House Republicans are pushing for a mandate that would enable Congress to spend billions of dollars on counter weapons programs to defend against Iran, The Hill reports.

The move comes just days before the House votes on its version of the fiscal 2013 defense authorization bill.

Lawmakers are also working to include measures that would increase the U.S.’ presence in the region in the event Iran continues to develop its nuclear weapons program, according to The Hill.

If passed, the bill would authorize funding for unmanned intelligence drones and a wide variety of weapons systems.

Rep. Mike Conway (R-Texas) introduced the weapons provision to the House floor April 24.

Many of the package’s provisions were included in the House defense bill, however some were excluded because they overlapped existing mandates in the Export-Import Bank reauthorization bill.

Sam Ray, a spokesman for Conway, told The Hill Monday that Conway plans to re-introduce the dropped portions as stand-alone amendments after the defense bill hits the House floor.
