President Obama named Michael Daniel to replace his retiring cyber advisor Howarad Schmidt, AOL Government reports.

Schmidt was named to the position in 2009 and announced his plans to retire Thursday in order to spend time with his family and pursue teaching opportunities in the cyber field.

Daniel brings 17 years of experience in the Office of Management and Budget’s national security division and 10 years of experience as chief of the intelligence branch, the report notes.

According to Jim Lewis, technology and public policy program director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Daniel is also well-known for his efforts relating to the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative.

Gen. Keith Alexander, head of the U.S. Cyber Command and National Security Agency, said Daniel has had an influential voice in cybersecurity within the executive branch and that he looks forward to continuing to work with Daniel, FierceGovernment IT reports.

In a statement released Thursday, Daniel said he joins the White House during a challenging time but has the benefit of building on Schmidt’s progress and leadership.

Hasson reports Daniel assumes his post as White House cybersecurity coordinator immediately.
