Federal Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel launched a government initiative Wednesday to promote agency-wide sharing.

The Federal IT Shared Services Strategy aims to provide agencies the tools necessary to eliminate waste and duplicative services, VanRoekel said in his blog announcement.

Agencies will be encouraged to use existing and additional strategic sourcing methods in order to combine IT purchases.

They will also assess their information technology portfolios’ maturity and management process to find areas that could be consolidated.

Existing policy on TechStat and PortfolioStat will help agencies determine which IT services and contracts can be consolidated to maximize the return on investment, VanRoekel wrote.

According to VanRoekel, the IT shared services initiative creates opportunities for industry as well as companies will be able to provide shared IT services to agencies.
