VanRoekel, Federal CIO

Federal Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel testified before a Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs subcommittee Thursday on the government’s information technology plan.

AOL Government reports the hearing discussed modern challenges federal agencies face while working to implement new technologies with flat or declining budgets.

VanRoekel emphasized replacing legacy IT systems with new technological platforms capable of multi-tasking, AOL reports.

His key objective is to decrease duplication, in correlation with the Office of Management and Budget’s digital government strategy, he said.

The OMB and Federal CIO share the objectives of capitalizing on investment returns from IT equipment and optimizing federal IT structure, he said.

VanRoekel said optimization methods include data center consolidation and centralizing the utility for commodity IT.
