Healthcare spending in the U.S. will increase by four percent by 2014, a government report says, according to Reuters.The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services also believes that by 2021, healthcare spending would rise 5.7 percent per year, or from $2.8 trillion in 2010 to $4.8 trillion in 2021.
Compared to the gross domestic product, healthcare spending could total 19.6 percent of GDP from the current 17.9 percent.
CMS expects 20 million more people to enroll in Medicaid in 2014, when health reform laws take full effect.
By 2021, CMS estimates that Medicaid will have $957 billion in spending for 85 million beneficiaries.
Federal and state governments provide joint funding for Medicaid.
