Transportation Department Chief Information Officer Nitin Pradhan is stepping down from his position to return to the private sector, effective Aug. 31, the department announced Thursday.

Deputy CIO Tim Schmidt will succeed Pradhan on an acting basis and the department said Schmidt will continue many of Pradhan’s initiatives.

Before joining the executive branch three years ago, he served as an information technology executive in the Fairfax County, Va. public school system.

Pradhan said in the release DOT’s IT division moved from being a technical service provider to a business technology partner for the whole department.

The department said Pradhan focused on directing the IT division, which maintains an estimated $3 billion portfolio, towards intrapreneurship, innovation, agility and business value during his tenure.
