The Transportation Department is proposing stricter rules and increased fines for safety mishaps in the U.S. pipeline system, Russ Blinch reports for Reuters.

According to the report, these new rules could serve as a guideline for implementing a pipeline safety law moved through Congress last year.

Secretary Ray LaHood said the country has approximately 2.6 million miles of pipeline, Blinch reports.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration can increase the maximum civil penalty from $100,000 to $200,000 each day for every violation.

Fines for successive, related violations can go from from $1 million to $2 million, the report says.

According to Blinch, the updated fine structure would be effective from Jan. 3 2012, when President Barack Obama signed the bill into law.
