Labor Dept Sequestration Memo Sparks GOP Uproar in Congress

1 min read

Republican members of Congress are in an uproar over a Labor Department memo issued last week, which said defense contractors are not required to send layoff notices to employees whose jobs might be cut under sequestration.

According to Politico, some GOP lawmakers claim the decision is a political ploy for President Obama to save face before the Nov. 8 elections and does not adhere to previous legislation.

The issue surrounds the 1998 Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires most companies to alert employees 60 days in advance if they are going to lose their jobs.

Democrats such as Rep. Adam Smith (Wash.) believe the memo correctly interprets the law and to notify every employee would be needless and just serve to alarm, according to the report.

DOL gave Politico several experts to explain the memo, including Harvard Law professor Benjamin Sachs.

He said that there is too much ambiguity about sequestration for there to be blanket notifications to employees and the noticies are not required under the WARN ACT.
