President Barack Obama intends to nominate Eric Fanning, currently deputy under secretary and deputy chief management officer at the Department of the Navy, to be the next under secretary of the Air Force.

The Air Force said Fanning, if confirmed, would succeed Erin Conaton, appointed defense under secretary for personnel and readiness undersecretary in June.

Dr. Jamie Morin has served as acting under secretary of the Air Force, to which he was appointed July 3.

Fanning would also serve as the Air Force’s chief management officer, senior energy official and the focal point for space at Air Force Headquarters if confirmed by the Senate.

The Air Force under secretary is responsible for organizing, training, equipping and providing for the welfare of 333,000 active duty members, 178,000 Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve members and 182,000 civilian workers.

Fanning previously held public service positions in the House Armed Service Committee, Office of the Secretary of Defense, the White House and the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism.

His private sector experience includes time at CBS News and Business Executives for National Security.
