The director of the National Security Agency said Wednesday the U.S. has the technical capability to defend against cyber attacks but needs updated cyber laws to improve its cyber posture, Federal News Radio reports.

Army Gen. Keith Alexander said he views inadequate cyber education about network operations and scope of threats as the biggest problem in the country’s overall cyber posture.

Jared Serbu writes Alexander told an information technology and security conference not having a cybersecurity law could lead to bad decisions if the nation’s infrastructure is attacked.

In the remarks to Symantec’s annual government symposium, Alexander also said that the government needs to work with the private sector and Internet service providers in the cyber realm.

He added Congress should pass a bill that will bridge the gap between companies he views as having solid cybersecurity postures and those that do not know their networks have been compromises, according to the report.
